District House is experiencing an “ongoing” water outage after a water main break caused flooding on the 2200 block of H Street Monday, officials said.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Services Public Information Officer Vito Maggiolo said the water main break caused “bulging” in the street with “massive spreading” of the leak and that FEMS dispatched a ladder truck to the scene after a call at 3:47 p.m. Director of Residential Education Kyle Johnson sent an email to District House residents at 6:28 p.m. Monday stating that the dorm currently does not have water service, directing residents not to flush the toilets or use the showers in the building and that the dining hall in the District basement will remain closed until further notice.

“D.C. Water has assessed the break and will return as soon as possible to make necessary repairs. Unfortunately, the time for restoring water is currently unknown,” Johnson said in an email.

Johnson said officials will provide another update by 9 p.m., or as soon as D.C. Water is on site.

Sherri Lewis, the senior communications manager at D.C. Water, said they received an alert at 5 p.m. and found a 6-inch water main break after their investigation. She said the repairs are expected to take around eight to ten hours.

Officials issued an initial GW Alert at 3:59 p.m. informing community members of “urgent” fire department activity in the 2200 block of H Street NW. A follow-up message at 5:11 pm said D.C. Water was on the scene and informed the community of the water outage in District and a final alert at 6:29 p.m. stated the outage is “ongoing” and further updates will be sent to District House residents via email.

Johnson said in the email to District residents that they should use the Lerner Health and Wellness center showers, the University Student Center, or other campus locations for bathrooms and Shenkman or Thurston halls for dining options.
