Senior pitcher Kara Clauss threw the second no-hitter in program history yesterday, guiding the Colonials to a 3-0 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in the first game of a doubleheader.
Clauss struck out four and walked none on 22 batters faced in the first contest of the day, pitching the second-ever no-hitter after Jen Hrycyna threw the first in program history March 29, 2006. It was also Clauss’ third shutout of the season.
The first game was scoreless through five and a half innings but the Colonials pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring all three of their runs to cement the victory. Senior Lauren Wilson led off with a home run to center field, her fourth of the season, and freshman Victoria Valos sent freshman Becca Garlinger and junior Autumn Taylor home on a double to left field.
The second game was tied at three after the sixth, and the international tiebreaker rule went into effect after a scoreless seventh. Each team advanced its last batter in that respective inning into scoring position in second base, and both Mount St. Mary’s and GW used the rule to score a run, tying it again at four. Freshman Alex Thompson ultimately scored the winning run for the Colonials in the bottom of the ninth, scoring off a wild pitch. Clauss pitched the final three and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit, striking out three and picking up her second win of the day.
GW next heads to Harrisonburg, Va., this weekend for five games at the James Madison Invitational.
