Campus operations, GW Police Department and other campus safety officials responded to flooding in the Science and Engineering Hall Saturday afternoon.

University spokesperson Kathy Fackelmann said a broken water pipe on the eighth floor caused “significant flooding” to a portion of the SEH building. She said the building is secure and closed to all non-essential personnel as Campus Operations and Campus Safety officials work to resolve and remediate the water issue “as quickly as possible.”

“The university will continue to share updates with the community as more information becomes available,” Fackelmann said in an email.

Officials sent out a GW Alert at 1:23 p.m. stating the building was closed to all non-essential personnel until further notice due to flooding, but did not specify where or how it was occurring. The alert states that technicians are on-site assessing the situation and attempting to resolve it.

The alert asks community members to only attempt to access the building for “essential work” like research through the 22nd Street mid-block entrance or otherwise avoid the area around the building.

Two GW Police Department vehicles were parked outside of the SEH building at the time the alert was sent out. Four GWPD officers and another University official were monitoring the 22nd Street mid-block entrance.

At 1:36 p.m., a GWPD officer placed cones and caution tape near the 22nd Street corner entrance to the building.
