Women’s basketball (5-2) sustained an undefeated home court record with a 56-46 victory over Georgia Southern (4-1) on Saturday and a 52-47 win over Morgan State (4-6) on Wednesday.
In Saturday’s matchup, the Revolutionaries handed the Eagles their first loss of the season, using a strong second and third quarter to secure the victory. The Revs continued this streak later in the week with a win against the Bears, as the team prepares to enter Atlantic 10 conference play next week.
Sophomore forward Sara Lewis led the Revs during Saturday’s game with 12 points and added eight rebounds, all on the defensive end. Sophomore guard Kamari Sims recorded a career-high 11 points and graduate student forward Mariona Planes Fortuny added 10 points.
In the first quarter, GW jumped out to a 13-10 lead while shooting 55% from the field and going two for two from beyond the arc. Sims drilled two three-pointers early in the first and the Revs increased their lead to eight in the second quarter after freshman guard Gabby Reynolds stole the ball and moved down the court for an easy layup.
The Revs pushed their lead in the third quarter to 13 points and recorded a game-high 19 points as a team with the help of Lewis and Sims. GW shot 53% from the field in the third and netted two threes from Sims and Planes Fortuny.
The Eagles tried to cut into the Revs’ lead in the final quarter, with a free throw from senior guard Nicole Gwynn at the 2:59 mark cutting the Revs’ lead to single-digits. But a Reynolds free throw revived GW’s lead to 10 once again to secure the 56-46 victory.
After the victory over the Eagles, the Revs welcomed the Morgan State Bears to the Charles E. Smith Center on Wednesday for a mid-afternoon non-conference matchup.
Graduate student guard Makalya Andrews led the team during the game with 16 points and five rebounds. Lewis added 10 points and junior guard Filipa Calisto recorded eight points and five rebounds. As a team, the Revs out-rebounded the Bears 41-28 in the match.
The Revs pulled ahead in the first quarter, out-scoring the Bears 10-8 in the first 10 minutes. Andrews hit a jumper at the 7:05 mark to bring the Revs’ lead to 6-0, but an 8-2 run for the Bears would narrow the gap to two points by the end of the quarter.
Another back-and-forth in the second quarter saw the Revs take a 23-20 lead into the half, shooting 43% from the field in the first half. However, GW went 0-6 from three, including 0-5 in the first quarter, but the team’s scoring came from strong rebounding in the paint.
The Bears would take a 32-30 lead at the 4:50 mark of the third quarter on a three from freshman guard Michaela Bogans, marking their only lead in the second half.
The Revs went on an 18-2 run after Bogans’ three that spanned until the 6:31 mark of the fourth quarter. Junior forward Caia Loving increased the lead to 14 with a layup at 7:23 to end the run.
Morgan State began their cut into the 14-point lead in the middle of the fourth quarter, going on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 50-47 at the 2:57 mark, with the Revs still on top. But the Bears were unsuccessful from the field for the remainder of the game.
Andrews hit both free throws with 11 seconds left in the game to bring the Revs’ lead to five, securing another victory on their home court.
The Revs move to 5-2 on the season with the pair of wins. GW will open their 2024-25 A-10 conference play on Tuesday, Dec. 3 against George Mason, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. from the Smith Center.
