The GW Police Department responded to a report of a weapon shown in Thurston Hall on Friday night, but University officials issued an all-clear after officers searched the building.
A University spokesperson said GWPD officers searched the residence hall after receiving a report from an individual of a weapon shown in the building. Vice Provost for Student Affairs Colette Coleman sent a letter to Thurston residents at 7:12 p.m. confirming that GWPD officers conducted a “thorough search” of the area and issued an all-clear after finding no weapons.
“There is no active threat to Thurston Hall residents,” Coleman’s letter states.
University officials issued a GW Alert for “urgent police activity” at 5:35 p.m., and asked community members to avoid the residence hall. Officials lifted the alert at 5:43 p.m.
“Gwopensecrets,” an Instagram account that posts anonymous submissions from the GW community, posted an Instagram story on Friday night alleging that a student had a gun in their dorm room on the fifth floor of Thurston Hall. The submission claimed some students heard GWPD officers and Coleman talking about a gun.
At 7:52 p.m. the account issued a statement on their Instagram story alleging that GWPD searched the building with Thurston’s community coordinators. According to the statement, multiple students responded to the account’s initial Instagram story and said that an individual told them about a gun in their dorm room.
“Thankfully, in this case, no weapon was found, and the situation has been resolved without incident,” the account’s statement reads.
