College bhangra teams from across the country gathered at Lisner Auditorium on Saturday to compete in the 30th Bhangra Blowout, one of the largest intercollegiate South Asian dance competitions in North America.
Bhangra, known for its complex choreography and intricate outfits, is a folk dance form that originated in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan, where it was first historically documented in the late 1800s.
A signature aspect of Bhangra is the Saap, a procession instrument that dancers play in unison during their routine.
Students, friends and family gathered to watch eight teams compete in one of the largest Bhangra competitions in the United States.
Despite not competing, GW’s team kicked off the event.
