Admit it: sometimes the GW Deli bacon, egg and cheese goes too heavy on the bacon.
If you aren’t in the mood for heaps of crispy bacon or you don’t want to wait in the around-the-block GW Deli line, the District offers plenty of breakfast sandwich options off campus that will satisfy your morning needs.
Here are The Hatchet staff’s picks for the best breakfast sandwiches in the District:
Call Your Mother’s No-Meat Sun City
Erika Filter | News Editor
Call Your Mother’s No-Meat Sun City brings the grease and carbs necessary to recover from any Saturday night adventures.
The sandwich is flavored with Middle Eastern za’atar seasoning that elevates the standard everything bagel with more herby flavors. Hot honey puts a touch of sweetness to the otherwise savory sandwich, and the fluffy scrambled egg adds a pillowy texture, setting the sandwich apart from nearby bagel rivals like GW Deli and Bullfrog Bagels.
Grab a laptop and pair the bagel sandwich with a lavender honeycomb or a honey oat latte to buckle down and study in the roomy, often bustling seating area in the Yours Truly hotel, home of the Jew-ish bagel shop.
1143 New Hampshire Ave. NW. Open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Any Day Now’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese Breakfast Scallion Pancake
Nick Perkins | Culture Editor
The District may not be on the level of New York City when it comes to the sheer quantity of bagels but wander down any street long enough, and you’ll stumble across a shop selling some sort of bagel sandwich. What you’ll likely only find at Any Day Now is a twist on the classic breakfast sandwich that features scallion pancakes as the buns.
The sandwich is made of crisp and crunchy scallion pancakes stuffed with a sausage patty, scrambled eggs and warm melted cheddar cheese. Plus, a side of chili sauce for those craving that extra kick in the morning will take the already elevated sandwich to the next level. The addition of scallion pancakes adds more flavor to the sandwich than a bagel does, and the meal overall feels lighter both while — and after — eating it.
But be warned: the scallion pancakes do little to hold the sandwich together, and forks are not provided with your order, meaning the end of this breakfast feast may involve a mad dash to wipe cheddar cheese off your hands before work.
2 I St. SE. Open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
Pearl’s Bagels’ Garden Party
Alexandra Plaisted | Reporter
A hot spot in the D.C. bagel scene, Pearl’s Bagels shines for its commitment to creating novel breakfast sandwiches and reliable bagels, hand-rolled daily right behind the register. Nestled in the Shaw neighborhood, this crowd-favorite bagel spot offers more than ten different sandwiches, which combine a variety of in house and locally sourced ingredients into eccentric flavor profiles.
Available on your choice of bagel, the Garden Party opts for an adventurous combination of garden-fresh ingredients. It packs in locally sourced elements — like microgreens grown from local urban agriculture startup Little Wild Things Farm — and classic plant-based favorites, including a seasoned and smashed slice of Impossible sausage.
Along with the layer of greens and sausage, the sandwich combines salty dill pickles, mouthwatering in-season tomatoes, crisp red onion and fresh cucumber, creating an assortment of flavorful produce that complements a creamy base of hummus slathered on either side of the bagel. The garden-fresh rendition of a meatless breakfast sandwich is a delight, but just be sure to grab extra napkins to compensate for its slightly slippery surface.
1017 7th St. NW. Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
