The GW Police Department arrested a suspect linked to recent break-ins at two GW-affiliated buildings early Tuesday morning.
GWPD officers arrested 40-year-old male Mohammed Mahmood Tuesday morning and Metropolitan Police Department officers charged him with second-degree burglary, according to an MPD arrest report. Officers investigated an ajar door at the GW Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps on F Street, and the MPD report states officers found Mahmood there, where he allegedly damaged a GWorld card reader, an air conditioning unit gauge and a thermostat.
“The suspect was arrested after an employee arriving for work noticed that an exterior door was ajar (2035 F St.) and called GWPD,” GWPD Chief James Tate said in an email. “Responding officers searched the building and found the suspect inside.”
Officers alleged Mahmood also broke into The Hatchet’s townhouse on 21st Street, where paper and trash was strewn throughout the building and chalkboards were erased. No damage or stolen items were reported from The Hatchet’s townhouse.
Tate said the suspect had no affiliation with the University, and GWPD did not believe the suspect left “personal items” behind.
