Fulbright Hall residents could see more UPD patrols after two fires happened in the residence hall this academic year.
Jeff DiNardo, the residence director for Fulbright Hall, sent an email to students in the building Thursday, informing them they should expect an increased police presence in the building after the fires. Both of the fires were caused by cigarettes in trash cans.
“Because of this, I have encouraged the RAs, and would also ask the same of y’all, to be much more liberal in reaching out to GWPD if there is a burning smell that you notice,” he said in the email.
He told the students “not to be surprised if they check in, even if it is only a matter of your breakfast toast getting a little more burnt than you may have otherwise enjoyed,” according to a copy of the email that was obtained by The Hatchet.
DiNardo urged students and resident advisers in the building to be more “liberal” in reporting potential fires, according to the email. He also said that he has met with resident advisers and is connecting with UPD about ways to ensure student safety.
The most recent fire was Feb. 14, which responders said was contained to only the one fifth-floor room.
In September, the residence hall was evacuated at around 3:30 a.m. because of a fire on the building’s roof.
UPD Chief RaShall Brackney declined to say whether there would be increased UPD patrols in Fulbright Hall after the fires, but said the department “makes adjustments to patrols as necessary.”
“GWPD regularly communicates with campus partners, including residence hall staff,” she said.
