Undergraduates can now receive a notation on their transcript highlighting research they complete that they would not normally receive academic credit for, officials announced in an email Thursday.
The notation will be listed on students’ transcripts as “UNIV 1995: Undergraduate Research Experience,” the email states. Provost Brian Blake said students who request the notation must be involved in 40 hours of activity in a semester relating to their research, must be mentored by someone affiliated with GW and must complete a final ungraded project to demonstrate their work.
“The ingenuity of our students impresses and inspires me every day,” Blake said in the email. “I look forward to seeing our undergraduate student research enterprise continue to thrive.”
He said eligible research experiences should stand out from other work students are pursuing that they are already receiving credit for. Students can request the notation “no later than the start of final examinations” for any given semester, Blake said.
He said the note will provide future employees and other degree programs with a “more complete picture” of a student’s past experiences and interests.
“Undergraduate students across all disciplines have valuable opportunities to work with world-renowned GW faculty experts on a wide range of research projects and experiences, allowing them to better learn their field, gain practical skills and be challenged under the guidance of a mentor,” Blake said.
