The GW golf team finished in 11th place at 19 over par at the Yale University Golf Club this past weekend. The tournament, originally supposed to be 54 holes, was cut short to 36 after rain fell on Connecticut for most of Sunday afternoon. Pennsylvania State University finished on top with a score of four over par for the tournament.

GW’s top performer in the tournament was sophomore Dan Mirabella, who finished seven shots over par. Other notables for the Colonials were sophomore Andrew Gallo and freshman Raman Luthra, who shot 11 and 13 over par, respectively. The Nittany Lions’ Mark Leon won the tournament at one over par.

Freshman Jack Tyler and transfer Brandon Muir, who had played in every single tournament this season, did not make it to the tournament at Yale.

Players said they had somewhat mixed emotions about their finish, as they lost to some teams they normally beat. But GW head coach Scott Allen said that for that the first time since the mid-1980s, GW overcame James Madison University, a perennial golf powerhouse.

“We’re not necessarily pleased with the results, but the win over James Madison was really big,” he said. “It’s really a positive feeling that we didn’t play our best golf but still beat a lot of quality teams. Hopefully we’ll bring our A game in two weeks.”

The course itself could have been a contributor to the Colonials not playing their best golf. Allen said the course can be tricky and tough at times, although it is probably one of the top 100 courses in the country.

Following the 11th place finish at Yale, the Colonials now have a week off after five straight tournaments. Their next tournament is the Old Dominion-SeaScape Invitational starting Oct. 27.
