A person used a hatchet to strike a man in the head near the Foggy Bottom Metro station Friday night, according to a Metropolitan Police Department report.

The report states Dieng Mamadou engaged in a “verbal argument” with an unknown individual near the entrance of the Foggy Bottom Metro station at 5:22 p.m. As they were arguing, the unknown individual struck Mamadou in the head with a hatchet and fled northbound up 23rd Street, according to the report.

The report states Mamadou received several “lacerations” on his head and walked inside the GW Hospital to receive medical assistance.

MPD spokesperson Sean Hickman said Mamadou is being treated for “non-life threatening injuries.” Hickman declined to comment further on the incident, saying the case is under “active investigation.”

University officials issued a GW Alert to the GW community about an hour after the crime, announcing police activity near the scene of the assault.

“Police activity near Foggy Bottom metro station,” the alert stated. “Please avoid the area until further notice.”

Officials sent out a second notice to GW community members when police left the scene.

“ALL CLEAR!” the report states. “Police cleared the scene at the Foggy Bottom Metro Station. Report any suspicious activity to GWPSD 202-994-6111.”

GW Police Department Chief James Tate said the assault did not occur on campus, and GWPD does not have any additional details to share about the incident.
