Women’s soccer head coach Tanya Vogel was hoping for a strong performance from her team Monday night, the kind that could give the Colonials some much needed momentum heading into their toughest stretch of their season.
But the Colonials (3-7) came out flat against the Eagles.
American narrowly defeated GW 1-0, in a physically-trying game that saw the Eagles offense fire off 19 shots.
“It just wasn’t a hard fought game from us,” Vogel said “They didn’t compete the way that they have too. They didn’t compete the way that I thought they would.”
The American forwards tested the GW defense early and often, continually taking shots from outside of the box. Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe made 7 saves in the game, falling to a single goal that cost the Colonials the game.
“AU was physical today, that’s for sure,” Vogel said “That’s the challenge of D1 soccer. Teams are physical and if we aren’t physical we are not going to have very much success.”
The Colonials open Atlantic 10 play Friday when they travel to New York to take on St. Bonaventure.
