GW set the world record for the greatest number of people wearing tricorn hats at once.

Fans flocked to the Smith Center Wednesday to watch men’s basketball face off with George Mason – and set a world record.

Three thousand fans donned tricorn hats, inking GW Athletics in the record books for the largest gathering of people wearing tricorn hats in the same place at once. The Colonials topped their average attendance of 2,454 and reached their second-largest attendance since nearly 3,700 people packed Smith Center against Howard Nov. 9.

“We are excited to have this opportunity to bring the GW community together and break a world record on Wednesday,” Kate Southall, the director of marketing, strategy and fan engagement, said in a press release. “Tricorn Hat Night is a great way to continue our rivalry with George Mason while also getting our students and fans ready for exciting basketball down the stretch.”

When the final buzzer sounded on a 73–67 win over the Patriots, the Colonials remained on the court for their normal rendition of the fight song but this time players sported tricorn hats. Redshirt senior guard Armel Potter said he was “trying to enjoy every moment” of the night’s festivities.

“I’m just blessed to be a part of that,” Potter said. “I’ve never been a part of nothing like that my whole five years in college, so it was just great to be a part of this unit, teammates and coaching staff.”
