A former professor of emergency medicine and the director of patient-centered care research at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences was fired as Planned Parenthood president, according to a tweet Tuesday.
Leana Wen, who is currently on a leave of absence at the medical school, said in a statement on Twitter that she is leaving the organization because of “philosophical differences” between her and Planned Parenthood’s new board of directors. She alleged in a separate tweet that the group’s board of directors ousted her at a secret meeting.
Wen was tapped as Planned Parenthood’s new president last September.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve alongside our dedicated doctors, nurses, clinicians, staff and volunteers who are on the frontlines of health care in our country,” Wen wrote. “I will always stand with Planned Parenthood, as I continue my life’s work and mission of caring and fighting for women, families and communities.”
Wen wrote that she led Planned Parenthood aiming to provide health care services to underserved women and families. She said the best way to protect abortion care is by “finding common ground” with Americans who agree abortion is a reproductive right.
