A new scooter company will join the District’s half dozen dockless scooter operators.

The District Department of Transportation granted the electric scooter company Bolt Mobility an operation permit through the end of December, according to a DDOT release Tuesday. The additional permit ups the number of dockless vehicles available in D.C. to about 5,000, the release states.

DDOT’s decision comes about month after the transportation agency temporarily reopened its dockless vehicle permit applications to meet its planned capacity of 6,000 dockless vehicles on the city’s streets. DDOT will open dockless vehicle permit applications for next year in October, the release states.

“Reopening the permit application allows us to expand the field of operators and reward the most innovative, safe and efficient providers of dockless bikes and scooters,” DDOT director Jeff Marootian said in the release.
