Mayor Muriel Bowser implored President Donald Trump Wednesday to end the partial government shutdown, saying local businesses will “suffer severe impacts” if the shutdown persists.

“During a shutdown, there are no winners, and our nation’s federal workers, including the 170,000 federal employees who work in Washington, D.C., pay the highest price,” Bowser wrote in a letter to the president, which was obtained by The Washington Post.

She said D.C. employees “will again step up” to collect trash and upkeep federally owned parks and roads during the shutdown, which began on Dec. 22. This month’s shutdown is the third time the government has closed this year.

Trash removal on federally owned parks costs about $46,000 per week, she said.

“The 702,000 residents of Washington, D.C., who pay the highest taxes per capita to the federal treasury, are stepping up to cover federal services during the shutdown, while we are the only citizens within the continental United States without a vote in Congress,” Bowser wrote.

She ended the letter by urging the president to reach a deal with Congress to reopen the government.
