“Thursday”
The Weeknd
Abel Tesfaye, known by his stage name The Weeknd, released his second mixtape “Thursday” Aug. 18.
The album maintains The Weeknd’s catchy yet evocative R&B sound, with a number of hits that bring you crawling back after the first listen.
“The Zone” is one of the slower beats of the bunch. It has a haunting melody and poetic lyrics to match. It was the first song I heard off the mixtape and I was immediately hooked. The track also includes a guest appearance by Drake, who contributes a fluid rap verse toward the end.
Another great one is “Life of the Party.” The lyrics focus on some pretty indiscreet references to cocaine, but the tone of the track is just angry enough to make it a great pump up song.
“The Birds Part 1” is also one of my favorites. It has a bit faster tempo compared with the others on the mixtape and a beat that makes you want to play it on repeat. The main line of the chorus, “Don’t make me make you fall in love,” offers that egotistical boost we all need every once in a while.
The collection of tracks on “Thursday” provides a unique and cohesive sound that’s perfect for everyday listening. Also, rumor has it The Weeknd’s third mixtape, “Echoes of Silence,” is scheduled for release Sept. 23. The performer has a reputation for leaking songs on the Internet, but keep an eye out for that one next week.
