With rainouts and the holidays, the GW club baseball team has missed more than 20 games this season. This past week, however, the team got in five games. In a must-win situation to keep hopes of winning the conference alive, the team swept Maryland in a doubleheader Sunday, winning 5-4 and 7-3, respectively. Matt D’Alessio picked up the win in the first game, allowing only two earned runs, and Tom Siek closed the door to earn the save.
Dave Meo picked up the win in the second game, the second of the week as the team improved their conference record to 7-2. Mike Schwimmer led the Colonials’ attack with four hits and three RBIs.
Last Monday, the club split a doubleheader with Loyola with an 8-7 win and 9-7 loss.
Dave Meo picked up the win in the first game and added two hits. In the nightcap, Loyola spoiled a pitching gem by Tom Siek to take the game into extra innings. In the rain Friday evening, GW battled rival Maryland and lost 6-5. Brett Kaplan supplied the offensive firepower for GW with a few hits and three RBIs.
Club baseball is looking to advance to the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship against either Virginia or James Madison May 10 and 11 but needs wins over upcoming conference opponents Loyola and UMBC. The winner of the conference championship will receive a berth in the National Club Baseball Association World Series in Bradenton, Fla. over Memorial Day weekend.
