POSTED 5:30 p.m April 26: A GW student shot and killed himself after seriously wounding a female University of Maryland student in a College Park, Md. parking garage Friday afternoon.
The male student, Ki Seong Kim, 21, of Maryland was pronounced dead several hours after the shooting. The female was in grave condition as of 4 p.m. Saturday, said Corporal Robert Clark, public information officer for the Prince George’s County police department. She is being treated in the Washington Hospital Center.
Kim, a GW junior, pulled his vehicle into a University of Maryland parking garage near the Comcast Center basketball arena around 12:45 p.m. yesterday, Clark said. He parked right behind the female’s car and “exchanged a few words” with the victim before pulling out a semiautomatic handgun and shooting the female in the head, Clark said. Kim then shot himself.
Kim, a resident of City Hall, reportedly dated the female, the Washington Post reported. Kim was an International Business major who transferred to GW last spring, said Gretchen King, GW’s director of Media Relations. He was also a member of the HOPE bible study group, she said.
“This is a sad and tragic event and we extend out thoughts and prayers to the woman’s family and the friends and the family of Ki-Seong Kim,” King said.
King confirmed GW sent grief counselors to City Hall Saturday afternoon. A University Police officer was checking GWorld ID’s at the City Hall front desk throughout the afternoon.
“We have (counselors) here, who are very experienced in dealing with grief,” King said. “In these cases, under such tragic circumstances, the whole community pulls together, there were friends and folks who cared for him.”
