Men’s rowing assistant coach Steve McCarthy will help prepare the U.S. Under-19 National Team for the World Rowing Junior Championships next month.
The team’s 59-person roster – which includes athletes from 19 states – and coaching staff were announced Friday.
McCarthy will be one of 14 U.S. coaches at the competition, which will be held from Aug. 8-12 in Racice, Czech Republic. The coach will train athletes for the men’s pair event, which is scheduled to begin Aug. 9.
The U.S. team will enter boats for all 14 scheduled events in both men’s and women’s disciplines.
Last summer, McCarthy led the U.S. Under-18 CanAmMex Team to a first-place finish in the same event in competition against Canada and Mexico.
McCarthy’s national coaching experience dates back to 2012, when he served as the high performance coach for the men’s junior national team.
During McCarthy’s first season at GW this year, the team swept its events at the GW Invitational and recorded two first-place finishes at the Stevenson Cup racing against Navy, Hobart and Columbia. The team struggled later in the season, finishing last in its only completed event at IRA Nationals.
