Be an early riser this weekend to catch World Cup matches at a pop-up bar dedicated to the competition, or to practice yoga with a view of the National Mall. If your alarm clock doesn’t agree with you, save up your energy for a Sunday concert fit for Father’s Day.
Friday
World Cup HQ
D.C. soccer fans can enjoy the first full day of games after Thursday’s World Cup opener at World Cup HQ. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a bill that allows bars to start serving alcohol at 7 a.m., one hour earlier than usual, for four weeks during the cup to accommodate the game schedule, so fans can clink glasses during morning games. The themed pop-up bar will be serving up globally-inspired fare from the chef at Lucky Buns, a burger joint in Adams Morgan. Friday’s matchups start with Egypt vs. Uruguay at 8 a.m., so you can sample breakfast options like the traditional English breakfast, then return for the bar’s happy hour rewind from 4 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the day’s games with $4 beer, $5 wine and $6 cocktails.
World Cup HQ, 1214 U St. NW. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. 21+.
Saturday
Yoga at the Capitol
Celebrate the International Day of Yoga by doing sun salutations with a view of the Capitol building and National Mall. This is a family-friendly event where no prior knowledge of yoga is required. Bring a yoga mat or meditate in the grass while sinking into deep stretches and breathing exercises. The event is hosted by the Embassy of India, and instructors from the non-profit Friends of Yoga will teach the course. The free session celebrating the fourth annual yoga celebration will help you relax after a long week.
U.S. Capitol Building West Lawn. 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Free.
Sunday
U2 at Capital One Arena
In honor of Father’s Day, head to Capital One Arena to sing along to some premier dad rock. U2 is spending two nights in D.C. as part of its Experience and Innocence Tour beginning Sunday. The classic Irish rock band has released 14 studio albums, sold more than 170 million records and has 22 Grammys – more than any other band. Enjoy a packed setlist with a mixture of old hits like “Vertigo” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” but expect several tunes off their newest album, “Songs from Experience.” Whether your dad tags along or not, you’ll be surrounded by the music of his age.
Capital One Arena, 601 F St. NW. 8 p.m. Tickets start at $41.
