The Shops at 2000 Penn will host a third full-service restaurant when popular burger spot Duke’s Grocery opens late next year.

Duke’s Grocery, a London-style neighborhood eatery in Dupont Circle with a second outpost in Woodley Park, will open their third location in the 2000 Penn complex. The restaurant, which will occupy the former Kinkead’s Restaurant space on the main floor of the complex, is slated to open in late 2018.

Daniel Kramer, the managing partner for Duke’s Grocery and Duke’s Counter, said the Foggy Bottom location will be their largest yet. He said the menu will serve up “the same favorites,” including their white truffle mac & cheese and the popular Proper Burger, alongside a “big and active” bar.

Kramer said the team at Duke’s Grocery has been looking to move into the Foggy Bottom neighborhood because of the University’s presence and nearby offices for places like the World Bank.

“Everybody’s there,” Kramer said. “I think what has happened is there’s been a lot of eyes on 14th Street and U Street, which has been great overall for the city, but I think Foggy Bottom has been a bit overlooked.”

Kramer said the future Duke’s Grocery home has “great bones” and they plan to bring in elements that can be found at their other locations, like a copper-top bar and British-themed decorations.

“It’s a really beautiful, historic, relatively raw space with exposed brick,” Kramer said.

The restaurant plans to accept GWorld upon opening next year, he added.

Kinkead’s Restaurant shuttered their doors in 2012 after two decades of business in The Shops at 2000 Penn. The space hasn’t been occupied since then.

The complex has since experienced high turnover in recent years but welcomed two new restaurants – Indian restaurant Bindaas and grab-and-go dumpling stand Laoban Dumplings – last month.
