Former men’s basketball forward Tyler Cavanaugh has signed an NBA contract to play with the Atlanta Hawks, according to his agency, the Glass Global Sports Group.

The 6-foot-9-inch big man and 2017 graduate played in two games for the Hawks during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas earlier this month. He scored six points in 20 total minutes of action.

The terms of the contract have not been announced, but G3 Sports announced in an Instagram post that Cavanaugh had agreed to a “partial guaranteed rookie contract.”

All NBA teams have to cut down their rosters to 15 members, not including two-way players, by the time the season starts on Oct. 17. The Hawks currently have 14 players set to play under contract for the 2017-18 season.

If Cavanaugh makes the roster and remains on the team until Jan. 10, then his contract would become guaranteed through the rest of the year.

After transferring to GW from Wake Forest, Cavanaugh led the Colonials to the school’s first ever NIT title in his first eligible season. Last year, he averaged 18.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game and finished his career with the 25th most points in program history – and the most for a two-year Colonial – with 1,278.

Last summer, Cavanaugh’s former teammate Patricio Garino signed a contract to play with the San Antonio Spurs. After spending the majority of the season in the D-League with the Austin Spurs, Garino finished his season playing in five games with the Orlando Magic after inking a two-year deal. Now Cavanaugh and Garino are the only two former GW students with NBA contracts going into the next season.
