Williams will have to sit out of the upcoming season before being eligible to play in the 2018-19 season per NCAA transfer rules.
The 6-foot-7-inch guard averaged 2.3 points per game in 17 appearances during his sophomore campaign at Illinois and played an average of 8.8 minutes per game.
The Colonials now have two open scholarships remaining.
Williams is the seventh player to become a Colonial under head coach Maurice Joseph and the third player to transfer into the program.
Earlier this month former Charlotte forward Luke Sasser announced that he will walk-on to the team. In May, former Charleston Southern guard Armel Potter announced his decision to transfer to GW.
Incoming freshmen Justin Mazzulla, Maceo Jack, Terry Nolan Jr. and Javier Langarica round out the new crop of Colonials.
After the 2016-17 season, four players transferred out of the men’s basketball program and redshirt junior Jaren Sina left to play professionally in Europe.
