Police said a man who attempted to rob Potbelly’s Sandwich Shop in Shenkman Hall last week was not armed after a GW alert described the incident as an attempted armed robbery.

At about 4:30 p.m. on May 3, the male subject entered the shop wearing a black ski mask and walked behind the counter demanding employee Robert Rush open the cash register to get money. Rush recognized the subject and responded by asking the subject to leave the store, according to a report from the Metropolitan Police Department.

The man left the store without any property and fled north on 23rd Street, according to the report.

A University alert sent out about 5:20 p.m. on May 3 described the incident as an “attempted armed robbery.”

A weapon is not mentioned in the MPD report.

University spokeswoman Maralee Csellar said GW alerts are sent out based on information available from MPD and the University Police Department at the time they are sent.

The police have not found the suspect, according to the report.

Police described the suspect as about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighting about 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hooded jacket with a white stripe on the sleeves, black pants and a black backpack, according to the report.
