The School Without Walls receives the third highest amount of funding per student for D.C. public high schools, a recent analysis of projected school budgets shows.

The study – by the Senior High Alliance of Parents, Principals and Educators – found the District funds $10,257 per student at SWW. The Duke Ellington School of the Arts receives about $11,135 and Phelps High School receives about $10,748. Eastern High School receives the most funding, at $12,096, but only houses grade 12 this year.

The analysis was based on projected budget numbers released last April for the 2011 to 2012 school year.

Magnet schools – or specialized schools that draw students from across the typical boundaries – like SWW historically receive more funding from the District, Cathy Reilly, director of the alliance, said.

Small schools similar to SWW also receive more funds because it is otherwise difficult for them to offer a full course range, Reilly said.

SWW Principal Richard Trogisch said when GW bought the school’s parking lot for $12 million and renovated the building, SWW had more funds to offer more courses.
