Terrapins top men’s tennis handily on the road
The men’s tennis team fell to Maryland Saturday, losing 6-1 in College Park, Md.
The Terrapins dominated the doubles matches, sweeping the Colonials to earn the doubles point.
Senior Richard Blumenfeld and Viktor Svensson fought hard against Maryland, but ultimately fell 8-5 as Svensson battled through an injury.
The Colonials entered singles matches down 1-0, and were ultimately unable to overcome Maryland’s strong start. GW senior Christopher Kushma earned the team’s lone victory, earning a three-set victory in the number four singles match against Maryland sophomore Sergio Wyss, who defeated Kushma last season.
The Colonials are now preparing for their three upcoming weekend matches, taking on Old Dominion Friday, Feb. 4, James Madison Saturday, Feb. 5, and ending the weekend Sunday against East Carolina. All three matches are set to begin at 2 p.m.
Women’s Tennis
The women’s tennis team opened its season with mixed success, defeating Drexel 5-2 Friday but then losing 5-2 to Penn Sunday afternoon.
The Colonials came out on top in doubles action against Drexel. Juniors Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner outlasted their opponents in a tough match, winning an 8-6 victory that secured the doubles point for the Colonials.
GW co-captains Corba and senior Jennifer Hirsh dominated singles play against the Dragons, each winning their matches in straight sets.
On Sunday, Penn swept the Colonials in doubles matches, and headed into singles play with an early 1-0 point advantage. GW would go on to win just two singles matches, as freshmen Julia Blakely and Leah Pascarella coming out on top over the Quakers.
GW next plays back-to-back meets against district rivals, facing George Mason Saturday, Feb 5 and then Howard Sunday, Feb 6 in Woodbridge, VA.
Gymnastics
GW fell to Towson on Saturday, losing 193.175-190.525, despite another strong performance from senior Leslie Delima.
Delima won the floor exercise with a score of 9.775 and came in first in the All-Around, posting a score of 38.800. Sophomore Kayla Carto also posted a first-place finish for the Colonials, scoring 9.700 on the balance beam to win that event. Freshman Betsey Zander performed the best on GW’s team on the uneven parallel bars, tying for a second place finish with a score of 9.725.
The Colonials next travel to Raleigh, NC, for a tri-meet with North Carolina and Iowa State on Friday, Feb 4. Then, GW returns to the Smith Center to host William and Mary on Sunday, Feb 11.
