Metropolitan police have made an arrest in relation to the murder of an American University professor found dead in her Maryland home Monday.

Deandrew Hamlin, 18, was arrested after he was caught driving the Jeep Cherokee of Sue Ann Marcum, a 52-year-old professor in AU’s Kogod School of Business who was found dead Monday morning in her Bethesda home.

Hamlin, a resident of Northwest D.C., was charged Monday with unauthorized use of a vehicle and felony fleeing. Montgomery County police spokesman Capt. Paul Sparks said police want to talk to Hamlin about the killing of Marcum, but he hasn’t been charged with her murder.

Police told the Washington Post that Marcum had trauma to her body, but didn’t release more details on the cause of her death.

Sparks told the Post that detectives believe Marcum may have been slain by someone trying to burglarize her house.

Marcum was found in the lower level of her home in the Glen Echo area of Montgomery County.

She was described in a statement on AU’s website as a “warm, caring and funny” person who was the recipient of Kogod’s Professor of the Year award for three consecutive years. Marcum began teaching at the business school in 1999, and was a graduate of the program herself.

She served as the director of the school’s master’s in accounting program and created a scholarship fund in her name.

Marcum also worked for seven years as the tax director for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus company.
