Men’s basketball junior guard Tony Taylor was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 second team in voting conducted by the conference’s head coaches, the A-10 announced Monday.
It’s the first all-conference honor for Taylor in his 3 years at GW and it comes after a breakout season in which he led the Colonials in scoring with 14.8 points per game. Taylor also leads GW in assists with 4.6 per game, the third best assist-per-game average in the A-10.
Taylor earned the second-team honor despite being forced to adapt early in the season to a new role for the Colonials once Preseason All-Atlantic 10 third team guard Lasan Kromah went down for the season with an injured left foot. Taylor blossomed as a scorer in his new role as GW’s number one offensive option, pouring in a career-high 28 against La Salle to open Atlantic 10 play and scoring in double figures in all but three conference games for the Colonials.
Taylor was the only Colonial to earn a spot on the all-conference teams announced Monday. Conspicuously absent from the A-10 All-Rookie team was GW freshman Nemanja Mikic, who leads the A-10 in three-point baskets made this season and is third in the conference in three-point shooting percentage.
After a strong start in non-conference play, Mikic’s production dropped off once A-10 play began in January and the freshman scored more than six points just once in GW’s first nine conference games. The Novi Sad, Serbia, native went on a four-game tear in February, ripping off 15, 20, 17 and 11 points against Richmond, Massachusetts, La Salle and Charlotte, but hasn’t been a factor down the stretch for GW, scoring three points Feb. 26 against Temple and being held scoreless March 2 against Rhode Island and Dayton last Saturday.
