Head to Alexandria, Va., where you can ignore all your mother’s advice from childhood and spend a day playing with swords. Go to Gadsby’s Tavern Museum at 134 N. Royal Street, and enjoy the Swordsmen’s Rendezvous. Tours are from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., last an hour and require a reservation (call 703-838-4242). The tours are for those ages 5 and up, and include audience participation, so if you have rage issues toward children, maybe you should be wary of volunteering.

Go to Arlington’s Iota Club and Caf? on 2832 Wilson Blvd. to see Saddle Creek band Now It’s Overhead. The Midwest is onlt a Metro ride away, as you can get a bit of Omaha in Northern Virginia with Bright Eyes’ buddies, who are out promoting their new record “Dark Light Daybreak.” You can grab some of the South, too, as the disc features the creative force and musical stylings of Athens, Ga., native Andy LeMaster, with a little bit of help from the girls of Azure Ray, Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink.

If you have $20

Get ye to the Concert Hall at Foggy Bottom’s very own Kennedy Center om Saturday night for some proper culture (no, listening to the classical muzak on the elevator doesn’t count) – world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The classical musician will be performing Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. The show is at 8 p.m. and will run an hour and 40 minutes, so come prepared to spend some time at this installment of the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra Classical Series.
