The GW women’s lacrosse team tied a program record for most wins in a season with an 11-10 win over Longwood Wednesday at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. Senior Meghan McDonough and sophomore Laura Hostetler both scored twice in the win, GW’s eighth win this spring and fourth in a row. Hostetler also had three assists.
The Colonials, who received votes in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll this week, trailed 9-8 with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game. But GW scored three consecutive goals to go ahead for good.
“It wasn’t our strongest performance but we fought through it,” GW head coach Chrissy Lombard said. “Even when we were down, I had the utmost confidence that we would stick it out and make it through.”
With nine minutes left, senior Heidi Mayer scored to extend the GW (8-2, 2-0 A-10) lead to 11-9. Longwood (7-2) was able to muster one scoring chance but freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Garman made a save and GW retained the ball with 4:30 remaining.
The Colonials played keep away for almost three minutes before Longwood forced a turnover. With just one minute remaining, the Lancers scored to make the score 11-10.
Longwood then came down the field on the offensive. With 30 seconds left, the Lancers took the ball from out of bounds and worked it around to the middle and took a failed desperation shot to end the game.
“I was thinking treat it like any other save, don’t put to much pressure on yourself,” Garman said.
“She has continued to come up with some big saves,” Lombard added. “Even though she is a freshman, she stayed poised and confident out there.”
Mayer finished the game with two goals and one assist.
“It wasn’t the prettiest win, but I think our team went out strong,” Mayer said. “Our bench came up huge and really provided a spark.”
The Colonials have two Atlantic 10 home games this weekend, the first of which is Friday at 3 p.m. against St. Bonaventure (7-1, 0-1 A-10). On Sunday, GW squares off against Duquesne (6-2, 1-0 A-10) at 1 p.m.
