Rev. Al Sharpton to visit American U.

The local chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity is bringing Rev. Al Sharpton to American University on Friday. Sharpton will discuss voter registration.

“(Sharpton’s presidential) campaign manager contacted us on Monday,” said Kappa Alpha Psi member Mo Kierstedt. “(His) campaign manager is a brother in our fraternity.”

Sharpton is a Democratic presidential primary candidate for the 2004 race.

The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. at American University’s Ward 1 Auditorium. Students looking for more information can e-mail [email protected].

Kappa Alpha Psi’s local chapter consists of seven members from GW and American, Catholic and Georgetown universities.

Order of Omega accepts applicants

The Order of Omega, the Greek-letter community’s honors fraternity, is accepting applications until Sunday at 5 p.m. Applications can be accessed at http://studentorgs.gwu.edu/orderofomega, and can be dropped off in the Student Activities Center office on the fourth floor of the Marvin Center.

The organization is planning to recruit 45 to 50 new members, said Jeffrey Schrimmer, president of the Order of Omega.

“Basically as long as you’re in a Greek letter organization at the University and not in a professional fraternity you can (apply),” he said.

Schrimmer said applicants need a 3.18 GPA and will be evaluated on leadership skills and a 150-word essay.

Schrimmer said the Order of Omega has about 370 chapters nationwide.

Delta Sigma Theta plans book club

Members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority will a Delta Book Club meeting Tuesday. The event, open to the campus, will be in the Alumni House Salon Room at 7 p.m.

The book being discussed is “Invisble Life” by E. Lynn Harris.

“The book is about a (black) man who leads a double life,” said Renee Lyons, president of Delta Sigma Theta. “He lives as a heterosexual man but sleeps with other men.”

“Within our chapter, we’re having a discussion about how black male sexuality affects the black family,” she added.
