The GW men’s water polo team lost to the U.S. Naval Academy 14-3 in its home opener Thursday at the Smith Center, as the Midshipmen smothered leading scorer Pat Dodge, holding him to one goal.

Ninth-ranked Navy (14-3) improved its wining streak to six games and raised its undefeated Collegiate Water Polo Association record to 4-0. The Colonials (2-9, 0-3 CWPA), following the opposite trend, have yet to win a conference game and are riding a seven-game losing streak.

GW struck first, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first minute of the match when Dodge lofted a ball over Navy goalkeeper Nick Hill’s head to score his team-leading 27th goal of the season. It would be the only goal Dodge would score, as he was heavily covered by Navy’s defense, which proved very effective in the Smith Center’s short pool.

Hill allowed only two goals and made five blocks, while goalkeeper Cody Acuna allowed one goal and made two blocks in his half of play.

The Midshipmen took the lead in the second quarter, jumping ahead of the Colonials 7-2 by the half. Navy outscored GW 6-1 in the second quarter.

The Colonials were buried even further in the second half, as Navy outscored them 7-1 with three goals in the third quarter and four in the fourth.

Junior Joe Donahue led the Midshipmen, scoring a game-high seven goals and adding two assists and three steals.

The Colonials host their second and final home game of the season when they take on conference rival Johns Hopkins Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
