Sophomore Matt Hane captured the No.1 singles spot as the GW men’s tennis team won the team championship at this weekend’s Easter Collegiate Athletic Conference Tennis North Championship held at Vassar College’s Joss Courts.
GW just edged out New York University in team points standings as the Colonials finished with 28.5 points and NYU finished with 28 points. The University of Connecticut placed third (26 points) and host Vassar College took seventh place (15 points).
Hane, who defeated NYU’s Mike Thompson 6-3, 7-5, led GW. The team also captured No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Jacob Jopling defeated NYU’s Aron Gortman 6-2, 6-0. GW’s Matt Treadgold defeated Stuart Brown of Middlebury College 6-3, 6-3.
A UConn defeat of NYU in doubles allowed GW to win the tournament. Uconn’s Adam Sadowksi and Brian Ravesloot, who advanced from the round of 32, got by NYU’s Rishi Chhabria and Richard Salem, 7-6 and 6-2. If NYU had won the doubles title, the Violets would have captured the team title as well.
