Former GW guard SirValiant Brown, who went unselected in the June 27 NBA Draft, will tryout with the Philadelphia 76ers July 11, his mother Marcella Brown said Sunday.

Marcella said her son has been in “great spirits” since going unselected in the draft two weeks ago.

Marcella said Brown got what he wanted, which was being passed over rather than being a late second round pick. She said he had expected to be chosen in the second round pick.

A player who is not drafted has the freedom to latch onto an NBA team as a free agent or entertain lucrative offers from teams overseas.

According to Marcella, Brown has received numerous offers from teams in Europe and from the NBA’s developmental league, which is the National Rookie League.

Several former GW players presently play in Europe including Yegor Mescheriakov, who plays in Turkey. Shawnta Rogers, who entered the 1999 NBA Draft with Mescheriakov, played with the Baltimore Bayrunners, a now defunct International Basketball League team.

After becoming the nation’s second-leading scorer as a freshman, Brown’s scoring average dropped about five points a game, and his sophomore season was a disappointment.

But Brown decided to forgo his final two seasons at GW and join a growing list of early-entry hopefuls.

At the NBA level, the guard would have to make a switch from shooting guard to point guard because of his size. He showed promise at playing the point during a pre-draft camp in Chicago, where he averaged about 8 assists per game.

Marcella said her son has trained every day since the June 27 draft and has been unavailable for comment.

Brown’s connection with the 76ers may stem from his summer playing days where he has worked out with the 76ers’ Allen Iverson.
