The name David Garza (his first name is pronounced Dah-veed) is unknown to most people. A newcomer to the celebrity music scene, Garza has been singing for quite some time. Credited with 10 albums, This Euphoria (Lava/Atlantic) marks his first release on a major label.
Born and raised in Irving, Texas, Garza developed his love of singing early. As time progressed, so did his passion for music. At the University of Texas-Austin, where he sang with his band, Twang Twang Shock-A-Boom, Garza decided it was time for a change. Tired of playing on the university’s quad for money, he dropped out of school, quit the band and went solo.
The Mexican-American guitarist and vocalist, whose music often is categorized as both rock and folk, did not reach stardom overnight. At first, Garza sold self-made tapes under his own label, Wide Open Record. Garza’s recent release, This Euphoria, catapults him to new heights.
This Euphoria is a wide collection of tunes for music lovers of all genres. “Disco Ball World,” the most well-known track on the album, is an upbeat blend of rock and disco sounds. It is impossible to sit still listening to the song. “Float Away” and “Sadness” have the same catchy beat that cannot be ignored.
“This Euphoria,” “Kinder” and “Slave” bring more melodious and cosmic vibes to listeners. During the title track, Garza’s unique voice and mellow sounds are similar to Beck’s. Featured on the Great Expectations soundtrack, “Slave” has a heavier beat than the other songs, but it is this sound that sets it apart from the other tracks.
“Lost,” “I Know” and “Flower” are a few of the slower songs on the album. In “Lost,” Garza’s voice mesmerizes the listener. “I Know” and “Flower” are so soothing they can easily lure listeners to sleep. “Flower,” a tender love ballad, boasts simple, yet beautiful lyrics.
An eclectic blend of rock and folk music, This Euphoria supplies listeners with songs to fit any mood. With this album, Garza proves that though it has taken time to gain recognition in the music industry, his career only has begun to take off.
David Garza will play in Dupont Circle on Wednesday as part of the Rock the Vote tour. He will open for Fastball at the 9:30 Club the same night.
