Renovations to the Marvin Center’s ground floor have caused problems for students who try to access services such as ATMs and lockers that have been relocated to the second floor.

Some students headed to the second floor through the first-floor lobby after midnight have been turned away because they are not on a Marvin Center access list.

The access list at the 21st Street side information desk includes only names of student organization members who have fourth-floor offices.

Students should be able to use the services on the second floor after regular hours of operation, but other Marvin Center floors will be closed, said Mike Petron, Marvin Center Governing Board chair.

Michael Brown, director of Marvin Center operations, said the second floor is accessible after hours through the H Street stairwell.

“It’s a pain in the butt to go up to the second floor,” GW student Sarah Slachetka said. “But the ATMs are always out of money anyway, so I don’t even bother anymore.”

Other changes include the relocation of the copy center to the Marvin Center second floor from the lower level of the Academic Center, which now houses only academic offices, Petron said.

The copy center will be moved to the ground floor once construction is complete. Ground floor construction may be complete before students return for the spring semester, Petron said. When renovations are finished, the ATMs will return to their original location on the ground floor.

Renovations appear to be on schedule, and by next week, the ground floor will be completely closed, Petron said. Students still will be able to access the GW Bookstore and the elevators through the 21st Street entrance.

EMeRG will occupy the old Student Travel Agency office on the ground floor after construction is complete and until a permanent spot can be located.
