GW men’s basketball coach Mike Jarvis has been a candidate for coaching positions at four other schools in the past year. But St. John’s University showed the most serious interest in him last week and is expected to offer Jarvis its vacant coaching position, according to several sources.

Sources confirmed that Jarvis was interviewed by St. John’s Athletic Director Ed Manetta and other school officials June 1. The school has not yet offered Jarvis the job, GW Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz said.

“This is serious,” Kvancz said. “No offer has been made yet, but it’s tough, because you know one is coming.”

Several published reports said Jarvis is St. John’s top choice to fill its coaching position, which has been vacant since Fran Fraschilla was fired last month.

In addition to Jarvis, St. John’s is considering St. Bonaventure’s Jim Baron, Paul Hewitt of Siena College and Bob McKillop of Davidson College, according to published reports. The New York Daily News reported that St. John’s officials interviewed Hewitt for a second time Friday.

In the past year, Jarvis has been a coaching candidate at the University of Virginia, Arizona State University and Northwestern University. However, none of those schools offered Jarvis a job.

A St. John’s athletic department official would not comment other than to say that Jarvis had been interviewed and was a candidate.

Neither Jarvis nor Manetta could be reached for comment.

Jarvis has said previously he is not looking for another job but will listen to offers from other schools and might leave GW if the situation is right.

Jarvis is seeking an $800,000 yearly salary from St. John’s – approximately $200,000 more than he makes at GW, according to published reports.

Jarvis has coached the Colonials for eight seasons, compiling a 152-90 record, including a 24-9 mark last season, the team’s best season under Jarvis. The Colonials have made the NCAA Tournament four times during his tenure.
