Customers can now purchase alcohol at Foggy Bottom Grocery seven days a week until midnight, following a policy change by the city’s alcohol regulators to allow grocery stores to extend their liquor sale hours.

The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration revised a D.C. code to allow grocery stores and wholesalers that exclusively offer beer and wine to sell the alcohol until midnight every day. All types of retailers still are barred from selling hard liquor on Sundays.

Previously, ABRA only allowed alcohol sales until 10 p.m. Stores could apply to extend their hours under the new rules beginning July 1 — the day the changes went into effect.

FoBoGro is approved to extend its hours and received an official printed license from ABRA today. Tonight is the first night it will begin selling alcohol between 10 p.m. and midnight – also when the store closes, Kris Hart, owner of the F Street grocery store and deli, said.

“We’re already open till midnight, so now it means we can sell alcohol all the way until midnight,” Hart said, adding that the application process was smooth because FoBoGro does not have a history of violating ABRA rules. He said he expects the extension of hours to benefit both his business and the neighborhood as a whole.

FoBoGro is the only retailer in Foggy Bottom that applied for a license change, ABRA spokeswoman Cynthia Simms said.
