Arrest made in alumna’s murder

Updated March 18, 8:30 p.m.

Montgomery County Police arrested a suspect in the murder of alumna Jayna Murray, who was beaten to death in a Lululemon Athletica store in Bethesda, Md. last week.

Police arrested 27-year-old Brittany Norwood and charged her with first-degree murder, Montgomery County police chief Thomas Manger said Friday night.

Norwood was originally considered a victim in the case, after she was found bound and claimed she was sexually assaulted in the store alongside Murray. Manger said Friday night that there is now no evidence that either victim was sexually assaulted.

After the incident, Norwood said two masked men entered the store after hours and committed the crime, however police said they believe that testimony to now be false.

“After finding physical and forensic evidence inside the deceased victim’s car, Ms. Norwood became a suspect in the case,” Manger said.

He said detectives found two sets of footprints at the crime scene belonging to Norwood and another set from a size 14 shoe that was recovered in the store.

Manger said there was a dispute between the two co-workers.

“We do have witnesses that were in the Apple store that heard two females arguing,” Manger said.

TBD reported Norwood is suspected of causing her own wounds after she allegedly killed Murray.

“We have no evidence right now that there was anyone else in the store, but it is still a very active investigation,” Manger said.

Kenny Fried, a representative from Lululemon, read a statement from the company at the news conference thanking police and noting three local area stores would remain closed through March 19.

“Our first priority remains with the families, the team members affected by this horrible tragedy, and supporting them through the next stage of the recent developments,” Fried said.

Norwood is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning, Manger said.
