Metro construction expected to delay travel Memorial Day weekend

Passengers can expect significant delays in travel on the Orange line Memorial Day weekend due to construction of a new Metro rail line to Dulles International Airport, according to a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority news release.

Trains will not run between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church stations from May 29 to May 31. Instead, the Orange line will be split intwo two sections – one running from Vienna/Fairfax-GMU to West Falls Church stations, and the other from the New Carrollton to East Falls Church stations.

Riders passing through the construction zone should budget at least 30 minutes of extra travel time to their schedules, according to the release. WMATA will provide free shuttle buses between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church stations during the construction.

In addition, from 10 p.m. to closing time at 3 a.m. on Friday nights prior to major construction days, riders should factor in 40 minutes of extra travel time because workers will be preparing for the weekend, the release said.

These changes will also apply from June 5 to June 6 and June 12 to June 13.
