D.C. homicides hit lowest level in 44 years

D.C. saw the lowest number of homicides recorded since 1966 in 2009, though five killings occurred just before the new year began.

According to The Washington Post, in the last two days of 2009 five people were killed in the District, bringing the year’s total to 143. Though an earlier report said the total was 140, the report had been compiled Dec. 31 before three more men died.

In 2008, 186 people were killed in the District. Yearly totals in the late 1980s and early 1990s reached more than 400 killings each year.
