Law School senator Joe Henchman resigned on Wednesday evening live on WRGW radio. On Tuesday night Henchman left the senate meeting at approximately 2 am after the senate voted down a provision he was pushing for that would have installed a voluntary spending limit on candidates in this year’s election.

The rule of putting a spending limit on the election is an interesting one. Should SA Presidential candidates be allowed to spend however much money they want? Would this be an unfair advantage to students who have the resources to spend such money? Maybe. Would it be a major disadvantage to students who don’t have the resources to spend comparable amounts of money? Maybe.

Both sides of the argument have compelling reasons and the senators debated the issue and eventually voted to put a mandatory spending limit on candidates.

Henchman was also an outspoken critic of the student court’s decision and was visibly upset when talking about it at the meeting.

I have not spoken with Joe in depth about why he left. I got the sense that the court case was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Henchman has spent much of the last calendar year working to research, revise and re-write the constitution. A constitution that was voted favorably upon by the students and then the SA court invalidated it.

Joe had reason to be upset; this was his hard work from the last year just thrown out the window.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not a Joe Henchman apologist. I am not pro-Joe Henchman nor am I anti- Joe Henchman. It just is a shame that the constitutional crisis has claimed its first victim.

Whatever Joe’s reasons for leaving, whatever one may think of Joe as a senator and what he did this year, the point is that now the SA has senators quitting their jobs because they are fed up with it.
