Redshirt sophomore forward Darren Buchanan Jr. has entered the transfer portal, he announced on X Tuesday.
Buchanan, a 2023-24 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team member, averaged 10.8 points per game this season, with 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists. After starting the team’s first 14 games this season, the Washington, D.C. native missed the next two games with an ankle injury and came off the bench for the remainder of the season when healthy. Before his injury, Buchanan averaged 15.1 points and set a season-high with 24 points in the Revolutionaries’ 81-71 loss to American University on Dec. 4.
The D.C. native faced a similar decision last year after a breakout redshirt freshman campaign but did not enter the transfer portal. In his second year in his hometown, Buchanan stepped into a leadership role after Maximus Edwards’ transfer and James Bishop IV’s graduation last season. His increased role paved the way for chemistry to develop with newcomer redshirt junior forward Rafael Castro and saw the team’s record increase from 15 wins in 2023-24 to 21 wins and a playoff victory this season.
Last season, Buchanan started 15 of the 16 A-10 games he was healthy for. He recorded a career-high 38 points in the Revs’ 119-113 triple overtime loss to Fordham University on Jan. 3, 2024. Buchanan led all qualified players in the conference in shooting percentage, firing at a 54.6 clip from the field. He finished the 2023-24 season by winning A-10 Rookie of the Week four times.
This is the second time Buchanan has entered the transfer portal. After starting his collegiate career at Virginia Tech, the 6’7” forward transferred to GW ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Buchanan took to X to thank his teammates, Head Coach Chris Caputo and the men’s basketball staff. He said in the post that he is grateful for his time in his hometown and that he will always be a Revolutionary.
Buchanan announced in the post he will play in the team’s College Basketball Crown tournament matchup on March 31 against Boise State in Las Vegas. He joins redshirt senior Keegan Harvey as the second Rev to enter into the transfer portal. This season for the Revs, Harvey appeared in six games. The 6’11” forward is transferring after three seasons at GW.
