Women’s basketball (11-15, 4-11) fell 67-57 to conference-leading Richmond (23-5, 14-1) Wednesday, dropping to 12th in the Atlantic 10.
The Revolutionaries were able to keep up with the high-flying Spiders in the first half, leading by a point at the break. But the Spiders used a strong second half to hand the Revs their second-straight loss.
Leading the way offensively for the Revs was sophomore guard Kamari Sims, who recorded 15 points, all on 3-pointers. Graduate student guard Makayla Andrews added 13 points with five rebounds, while freshman guard Gabby Reynolds and junior guard Filipa Calisto each added 10 points.
Reynolds and Sims kick-started the Revs offense in the first quarter, draining threes to get GW out to a 6-0 lead right out of the gate. The teams traded points for the rest of the quarter, with the two tied at 14 at the end.
In the second quarter, the Spiders started to find their game from beyond the arc, going four of 10 from three. But the Revs held their own, going five of eight from three in the quarter. With a second left and the Revs down by two, Calisto drilled one from downtown to give her team a 31-30 lead at the half.
The teams traded baskets to start the second half. But the Spiders began to pull ahead, using a 12-3 run spanning five minutes to increase their lead. Baskets from junior forward Maggie Doogan, who recorded 26 points in the victory, and junior guard Rachel Ullstrom gave the Spiders a 55-48 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Andrews and Calisto tried to get the Revs back into the game, cutting the Spiders lead to 55-54 with 7:58 to go. However, the Spiders would notch the next two baskets and use a 3-pointer and a layup from Doogan 39 seconds apart to give them a nine-point lead they would not relinquish.
With the loss, the Revs fall to 4-11 in the A-10 with three regular-season games remaining before the start of the Atlantic 10 Basketball Championships in Henrico, Virginia. The Revs return home to the Charles E. Smith Center to take on Davidson on Sunday, with tipoff set for noon.
