Women’s basketball (8-9, 1-5 Atlantic-10) fell 64-63 to Saint Louis on Wednesday, marking its fourth-straight loss.
Junior guard Fillipa Calisto led the team in scoring with 15 points and two assists off the bench, shooting three of four from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Gabby Reynolds finished with 14 points but fouled out in the fourth quarter and graduate student forward Paige Mott recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Revolutionaries and Billikens struggled from the floor. Both teams shot 39 percent from the field — the Revolutionaries connecting on 41 percent of shots from three, compared to the Billikens’ 13 percent. The Billikens took advantage of their fast-break opportunities, outscoring the Revs 21-2 in that category.
The Revs struggled to find their offensive footing in the first half, shooting 30 percent from the field. The Billikens jumped out to a 19-10 lead at the end of the first after junior guard Brooklyn Gray finished the quarter by hitting three free throws.
The Revs’ bench was key in the second quarter, scoring 11 of the team’s 15 points. Still, the Revs struggled offensively in the second quarter, with the Billikens extending their lead to 15 points, the game’s largest. The Billikens went on a 7-0 run to conclude the first half with a 40-25 lead.
The Revs came out firing in the second half, doubling the Billikens’ score to cut their lead to two by the end of the third quarter. Calisto’s three-pointer and jumper cut the Billikens’ lead to three points, bringing the score to 52-49 with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Junior guard Natalie Sierra-Vargas ended the quarter with a jumper to bring the score to 53-51.
A three-pointer made by Calisto to open the fourth quarter gave the Revs their first lead back since the fourth minute of the first quarter, making the score 54-53. With a minute remaining of the game and the score tied at 60, Head Coach Caroline McCombs called the timeout.
Coming off the timeout, senior forward Maxine Engel received a pass from Mott and hit the three-pointer to bring the score to 63-60 as the Billikens then called a timeout.
Gray then made a layup coming off the timeout to cut the lead to one. A foul by Engel sent Billikens’ graduate student forward Mya Glanton to the line for two free throws, who drilled both, giving the Billikens a 64-63 lead. With six seconds left, sophomore guard Sara Lewis tried to find an open shot but her three-pointer to win the game was off line.
With the loss, the Revs move to 1-5 in A-10 play. The team has struggled in the A-10 thus far, having lost four of their last five games. After starting A-10 play with their lone win of this stretch, a 65-64 victory over the La Salle Explorers on Dec. 29, the Revs have lost four straight. They are currently No. 13 in the A-10.
The Revs are inactive on Saturday and will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 22, when they host the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
