The annual debate between GW College Democrats and GW College Republicans scheduled for Tuesday was postponed after GW College Democrats allegedly withdrew from the event.
The debate — which was announced on Instagram earlier this month and advertised with signage around campus — was canceled via Instagram story posts from both organizations Tuesday afternoon, just hours before its scheduled start time, and has been rescheduled for Monday, Nov. 4, according to GW College Republicans. Just one day before the presidential election, the debate will continue a tradition of biannual debates between the organizations in which they touch on hot-button political issues like the climate and the economy.
“We are disappointed by GW DEMS’ decision to withdraw at the last minute,” the College Republicans said in the post.
Ian Hoerr, the president of GW Democrats, cited Vice President Kamala Harris’ rally on the National Mall on Tuesday as reason for the cancellation.
“Yesterday our nominee for president gave her closing argument for the campaign just over 10 minutes from campus,” Hoerr said in a message. “Attendance for our debate would’ve been low, as many of our members wanted to see someone who quite possibly may be the future president of the United States.”
Christina Carris, the director of public relations for the College Republicans, said the College Republicans wish they had received more notice regarding the Democrats’ withdrawal, but that the debate is now rescheduled.
“While we do wish we were given more notice, we are relieved to have rescheduled the debate for 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the amphitheater,” Carris said in a message. “It is one of our most looked forward to events that we have every semester.”
