Officials evacuated Funger, Duques and Tompkins halls at about 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, citing power outages in all three buildings.
Officials issued a GW Alert at 2:54 p.m., the latest of five alerts, stating that power had been restored to the buildings and that they could be reoccupied. An earlier alert, issued at about 1:30 p.m., stated that officials could not reopen the three halls until power is restored, and that GW staff members were working with Pepco, an electric utility company, to resolve the issue “as soon as possible.”
The 1:30 alert states that access to the three buildings is restricted to Emergency Services and Facilities personnel, and officials have initiated GWorld Emergency Mode to prevent community members from inadvertently entering the space. University spokesperson Julia Metjian deferred a request for comment on what caused the power outages, how officials are working to remedy them and when officials anticipate the buildings to re-open to the GW Alert.
Provost Chris Bracey will contact faculty members via email regarding remote class instruction and students can contact faculty for more information on where their classes will meet, the alert states. Staff members working in the buildings should contact their supervisor with questions, per the alert.
“The University will continue to provide regular updates until this issue is resolved,” the alert states.
The alert states that GW Police Department officers are on site to monitor who enters the buildings. Vehicles in the parking garage can exit, but officials will not permit any vehicles to enter.
Officials issued the first GW Alert about the incident at about 11:20 a.m. for urgent fire alarm activity at Duques and Funger halls. D.C. Fire and Emergency Services Public Information Officer Vito Maggiolo said units cleared the scene with no indication of an emergency.
