D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services put out a small trash fire at the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station Tuesday afternoon.
FEMS Public Information Officer Vito Maggiolo said at 12:30 p.m. that FEMS responded to and extinguished a small fire under the mezzanine platform along track two. He said Metro officials temporarily halted train traffic through the station, and are now running trains through a single track.
A Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority spokesperson said the fire was caused by trash that was caught between a light and the wall. Normal service at the station resumed at 1 p.m., the spokesperson said.
Five D.C. FEMS trucks responded to the scene, and fire fighters stood in front of the station’s escalators to prevent people from entering the station while FEMS personnel put out the fire. FEMS extinguished the fire using a hose that personnel attached to a street-level fire hydrant by the escalators.
University officials issued a GW Alert at 12:25 p.m. for urgent fire department activity due to “smoke conditions” at the Metro station. D.C. officials closed 23rd Street between H Street and Washington Circle and I Street between 22nd and 23 Streets, according to the alert. GW issued an all-clear at 1:23 p.m. and said D.C. officials re-opened the roads.

The Hatchet incorrectly reported that FEMS extinguished a small track fire. FEMS extinguished a trash fire. We regret this error.
